5 Tips to Keep the Heat Inside This Winter

Depending on where you live in the U.S., you already know that winter weather can be hard on your home and your wallet, if unprepared. To save your peace of mind and your wallet, check out these 5 tips to keep the heat in your home this winter season.

1. Close Doors of Rooms You’re Not Using

One of the easiest ways to waste heat is by heating rooms that aren’t in use. When you shut these doors, you are leaving more warm air for the common areas and preserving heat.

2. Light the Fireplace

If you are fortunate enough to have a fireplace in the winter make use of it! A fire can significantly heat up an entire floor while contributing nothing to the cost of your energy bill. And as an added bonus, a fireplace is a great cozy vibe when you find yourself hosting during the holidays.

3. Install a Programmable Thermostat

With a programmable thermostat you have the power to preset temperatures for different times of the day, like scheduling the heat to kick on 10 minutes before you arrive home from work. Furthermore, you can even adjust temperatures in real time from your phone. A device like this can drastically prevent waste and maximize your money.

4. Keep your Blinds and Curtains Closed

Heavy curtains go a long way in retaining heat, and when you keep your curtains and blinds shut you reduce the risk of losing heat through the windows. Data from Energy.gov suggests that approximately 30% of a home’s heat is lost through windows. Do your due diligence this winter and keep those windows covered, especially at night!

5. Clear your Vents

The key to good airflow, whether it be warm or cold air, is ensuring that nothing is blocking the vents.  Walk through your dwelling and check to see if any furniture is obstructing the vents or the heater. If so, consider rearranging the furniture in a way that promotes free airflow.

Wintertime can be expensive for a homeowner, but it doesn’t have to be. Follow these tips to keep your home toasty and make sure you’re getting the most for your money.
